I’m happy where I’m at, content with my life in New York City, and have no interest in living in London. The job offer from a rival finance firm would have been an automatic no for me, if it hadn’t come with a kinky carrot. And Jules? Jules is definitely not Daddy material. And third, because he’s trying to find me a Daddy. Second, because Jules is fabulous, and I most definitely am not. How do I know? First, because this is real life, not a romance novel. Secretly being in love with your best friend isn’t just dumb, it’s hopeless. That’s not just my way of sneaking in the chance to finally kiss his sweet lips before I find him the Daddy he needs. When your bestie is too shy to go after what he needs, the obvious answer it to drag him along as your fake boyfriend when you’re hired as entertainment at a swanky London hotel. At that point, Universal announced it would make “Mountains” with del Toro as a 3D movie starring Tom Cruise and produced by James Cameron. Lovecraft’s science fiction-horror novella “At the Mountains of Madness.” The project seemed a possibility after the Oscar-winning filmmaker left “The Hobbit” in 2010. The whole time I was reading the novel, I was engaged. Of course, nothing is that simple and every one of them has their own secrets that manage to come out throughout the course of the investigation. Though they are from separate worlds, the four must come together to prove their innocence. The book bounces between the four students: Bronwyn, the straight-A student Addy, the popular pretty girl Cooper, the baseball star and Nate, the teen drug dealer. When one of the students falls dead from anaphylactic shock, the other four become suspects. The book follows five high school students who spend an afternoon in detention that ends with a murder. It didn’t take me long to add it to my To Be Read list and shortly after I borrowed it from the library to read. One of Us Is Lying was a recommendation from a friend who described it as similar (but better) than Pretty Little Liars. They flowed into each other seamlessly so that, often the transition from one character to another was almost unnoticeable. They fit well together with no disjointed chapters. It could also have to do with how the book and the different perspectives were structured and arranged. I guess I’m getting used to it because I didn’t hate the multiple POV quite as much as I normally do. Like the two books before Queen of the Darkness, this one too was told from multiple points of view. That Daughter of the Blood was her debut novel is truly astounding for the sheer scale of the world she had built and the richness of the characters who inhabited it. I read Written in Blood by Anne Bishop and liked it enough that I wanted to read other books she had written. I am going to refer to it as a trilogy because, for the most part, this will be a review for all of the three books in the series. The Black Jewels Trilogy was every bit as frustrating and exasperating as it was amazing.
